If you cut out the lives feature, there's not really much feedback from the game on whether you're getting better over time or not.ĮDIT: I guess the bigger issue is replayability. One can debate whether that's good or bad. I spent a lot of time on Super Monkey Ball as a kid, and the lives system probably prevented me from seeing all of the expert levels. It's early days so I get that there will be growing pains, but just like Celeste updated Assist Mode to be far better than it was at launch, I hope going forward devs will start to see that just throwing in an invincibility option, whilst it might let people experience the story, doesn't really do very much to make the gameplay experience itself accessible. Going on Twitter to preach about how you want all people to be able to enjoy your game is not a substitute for proper rigor in accessibility design. I don't want to come off too accusatory as it is still early days so I do not expect designers to simply have all the right answers yet, but I just hope that slapping in a few options and calling it a day does not become the de facto standard for accessibility because it really doesn't do the job that well. ![]() These games have received a lot of praise for their level design and having your accessibility feature be something that warps the level design is a problem. Yes I'm glad that it is finally being taken seriously, but a lot of these much-praised accessibility options really leave a lot to be desired. I've heard from numerous people that the difficulty changing isn't even that noticeable, and the reduction in damage from resistance is a negligible amount.Īs both an accessibility advocate and designer I think we have a long way to go. How are you or the developers sure people will learn about it in the first place? Having it not be something apparently directly explained is even worse. If they don't like the difficulty, they may not stick with the game. It doesn't matter who it is, everybody experiences games differently, and there are 100% going to be people whose experience was "Hades is too hard, I like the characters and personalities, but I want an easier option". If you have it included but not as a starting option, you're going to confuse people. Some games go a step further and allow you to change the gamewide difficulty, or even separate parts of the difficulty if they're really shooting for extra credits, but that's been the default since DOOM and before. You pick an option that suit your desired experience.
